GPS Tracking : Frequently Asked Questions

Our GPS Tracking Solutions and Pricing

What makes VeriFind different to other GPS tracking services?
What is the right GPS Tracking Solution for me?
Choosing the right GPS tracking solution can be difficult, and will depend on your specific requirements.

Please contact us to discuss your specific requirements, we are more than happy to provide you with a GPS tracking solution specific to your needs.
What is the difference between Consumer and Business grade GPS tracking service?
Consumer grade GPS tracking devices can have many limitations that make them unsuitable for business use. For example, in the USA, failure rates of up to 40% of cheaper consumer grade GPS devices have been seen within the first 12 months after purchase.

Consumer grade GPS devices are not designed with business requirements in mind. They may have limited potential to scale for fleet tracking, and may require proprietary software installed on your PC or mobile device in order to use them.

Couple that with lack of support (we provide 24/7 emergency support for our GPS services), and you can see how a cheaper GPS unit might not be able to meet your needs.

Contact us to discuss your GPS tracking needs, we're sure we can provide a robust and reliable solution that fits your requirements!
You advertise a rental/lease program with unlimited locates from $1.99 per day. Do I qualify?

For individuals, so long as you can prove that you are a New Zealand resident, are over 18 years of age, are in full time employment (or have a guarantor who is in full time employment) and have a clean or near clean credit rating with Baycorp, then you will likely qualify.

Alternatively, there are short term rental and outright purchase options which are not subject to credit criteria. Check out our pricing options here.

What's the difference between GPS Navigation and GPS Tracking?
GPS navigation units display current location information and how to travel from your current location to a defined destination, like an in-car navigation unit. The GPS location info cannot be seen or used by anyone else..

GPS Tracking units sends the GPS location information to a central computer for use in the monitoring of the vehicle for Security, Safety or Productivity Improvements. Because the location info is sent to a central server, multiple people can access and view the location data for both current and historical positions.
Can't I just use a mobile phone with GPS capability?
A GPS enabled mobile could provide you with excellent tracking capability, however you may have requirements that cannot be met by a mobile phone alone. Contact us to discuss your GPS tracking requirements, we can tailor a solution that will meet your needs.

Our GPS Tracking Service

How accurate is Verifind's GPS Tracking service?
Very. In most cases, our GPS tracking software can locate your device to within approximately 5 meters of the GPS Tracker's last open sky reading.
How "real time" are the location readings of VeriFind?
This is dependent on the reporting frequency chosen, which is set by the user and can range from once per week to every 22 seconds.

On demand polling can provide even closer to real time results with only a few seconds time delay from polling to reporting.
If the VeriFind GPS Tracker is undercover (out of sight of the GPS satellites) am I still able to obtain an accurate position?
The GPS tracking device will always report it's last "open sky" position.

If the GPS Tracker is underground or undercover, the position that is reported will be the one for just outside the entrance of the building or cover where the locator has disappeared into. For most applications, this is sufficient to locate the target accurately.
Under what circumstances would I not be able to obtain an accurate position of the VeriFind locator?
If any of the following apply, then the polled location reading of your target may not be accurate:
  1. If the GPS Tracker is outside of the GSM network coverage area.
  2. If the GPS Tracker's antenna has metal obstructing more than 70% of its view of the sky for a prolonged travelling distance (such as with a bad vehicle installation).
  3. If the GPS Tracker both loses external power and the internal battery power runs out (it is recommended to configure the GPS Tracker to send a "Hail Mary" report should battery levels reach critical level).
  4. If the GPS Tracker or SIM card is faulty, not configured correctly or is not connected to or able to communicate over the mobile network.
  5. If the US Military blocks access to the civilian population from accessing the GPS satellites.
What happens if I need to locate my vehicle/asset but I cannot get internet access?
VeriFind operates a free 24/7 emergency helpline as part of its service. A live operator will advise you where your target is if it is lost or stolen and you are not in a position to get on the internet. Simply phone 0800 837 434.
Will VeriFind enable me to remotely disable the vehicle, or lock and unlock the doors?

This is an optional extra that can be configured at time of installation. VeriFind recommends however that unless these features are essential to your needs that you do not request them as by adding this functionality the covertness of the installation will be impaired.

If the GPS Tracker is used as a GPS Tracker only, it becomes almost untraceable for thieves. If the device is connected to horns, door locks, ignition wires, starter wires, etc, a thief may find and disconnect the unit simply by tracing wires, rendering it of little use.

Can I use a Personal GPS Tracker instead of a Vehicle GPS Tracker to track a vehicle?
A Personal GPS Tracker can be placed in the vehicle and be used as a 'portable GPS Tracker'. The drawback of using the portable GPS Tracker for vehicle tracking is that the device is often placed in plain sight, and needs to be plugged in (usually via the cigarette lighter adapter). The vehicle installed GPS Tracker is usually installed out of sight, and can be integrated to various sensors and alarms/immobilisers.

About GPS Tracking

What is a Geofence?
Geofencing is a circle or a square you place on our Website map. You can then set your alerting options to notifies you by SMS txt and/or email if your target crosses the boundary of the circle or box. This can be extremely useful for monitoring and surveillance.
How accurate is GPS versus Mobile Location Services?
GPS tracking units are able to obtain accuracy down to 3-10m depending upon many factors. The accuracy of Mobile Location Services (MLS) is approx 1000+ meters. MLS accuracy is much worse than that of GPS but has it's place. MLS is further affected by factors similar to GPS in the sense of the barriers affecting signal quality and the density of GSM towers to assist in the triangulation effort, with some regional areas having GPS postioning errors of 1-2 kms!
Will GPS work inside a building?
It is highly unlikely GPS Location will work inside a building, as GPS signals are weak and are obtained from satellites high above the earth. In the lucky instance where a GPS device is able to obtain a GPS location fix whilst inside, it is often due to the placement of the device near a window or open area within the building.
Can I use my mobile for GPS tracking instead of a dedicated GPS Tracking device?
Of course, however, be aware that utilising a mobile phone to undertake GPS Tracking also has limitations such as high power drain flattening your mobiles battery faster than normal while it is being used as a GPS Tracker.

Another area of concern is for the user themselves, where they could find that the mobile device cannot effectively run multiple applications at the same time (or are required to suspend GPS Tracking while taking a call!)

Don't forget, an unwilling user may simply disable the application on the mobile phone.
